Description
Beet mild yellowing virus (BMYV) is a significant plant pathogen belonging to the genus Polerovirus within the Solemoviridae family. It primarily infects members of the Amaranthaceae family, including sugar beet, beetroot, and chard, causing substantial physiological changes in the host plants.
The disease symptoms typically manifest as chlorosis (yellowing) of the older leaves, which often become leathery and brittle. While the symptoms caused by BMYV are generally considered milder than those of the Beet yellows virus (BYV), the pathogen still significantly disrupts photosynthesis, hindering the plant's growth and overall development.
The biology of BMYV is strictly dependent on its aphid vector, most notably the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae). The virus is transmitted in a persistent, circulative manner, meaning the aphid must feed on an infected plant to acquire the virus, after which it remains capable of transmitting the pathogen throughout its lifespan.
Development and spread of the virus are driven by aphid migration patterns and environmental conditions. Warm, dry spring seasons often lead to increased aphid activity, resulting in early-season infection of sugar beet fields. The virus survives the winter in various weed hosts or in volunteer beet plants that persist in the field or surrounding areas.
The economic impact of BMYV is linked to yield loss and reduced sugar content in root crops. Effective control measures focus on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, including the timely application of systemic insecticides to manage aphid populations, the removal of alternative weed hosts, and the deployment of resistant or tolerant beet varieties to minimize crop damage.
