Description

Beet mosaic is a viral disease caused by the Beet mosaic virus (BtMV), a member of the Potyviridae family and the Potyvirus genus. This plant pathogen is characterized by flexuous, filamentous particles containing single-stranded RNA. It is a major economic concern for producers of sugar beet, fodder beet, and table beet worldwide.

The disease symptoms typically appear on younger leaves as a faint, light-green mosaic or mottling. As the infection progresses, leaves may become distorted, curled, or stunted. These physiological changes reduce the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant, which directly impacts the development of the taproot and reduces the overall yield and sugar concentration at harvest.

The biological cycle of the virus relies heavily on aphid vectors, such as the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae). The virus is transmitted in a non-persistent manner, meaning aphids acquire the virus by probing infected tissue and can transmit it to healthy plants almost immediately. During winter, the virus persists in biennial beet crops, sugar beet stecklings, and various weed hosts like Chenopodium album.

Environmental conditions that favor aphid migration and rapid reproduction are critical for the spread of the disease. Warm, dry springs often lead to early infestations. The virus spreads from primary infection sources—often on the edges of fields or adjacent weed patches—to the rest of the crop as winged aphids migrate across the field.

The economic impact of the virus is significant, leading to reduced root weight and lower sugar quality. Effective management strategies focus on interrupting the virus transmission cycle and minimizing the vector population:

  • Eliminating weed reservoirs like lamb's quarters near production fields.
  • Maintaining adequate spatial distance between new crops and overwintering seed crops.
  • Monitoring aphid populations to apply targeted insecticide treatments when necessary.
  • Adopting early planting dates to allow plants to grow larger before peak aphid migration.
