Description
Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV), classified within the genus Benyvirus, is the causal agent of rhizomania, a devastating disease of sugar and fodder beets. This virus is widely recognized as one of the most economically significant pathogens affecting sugar beet production globally, causing severe damage to the plant's vascular and root systems.
The primary symptom of the disease is the proliferation of fine, hair-like rootlets on the main taproot, commonly known as "root beard." Above-ground symptoms include stunted growth and chlorotic leaves. Inside the taproot, brown vascular necrosis often develops, leading to a significant loss of root mass and sugar content.
The biological cycle of the virus is strictly dependent on the soil-borne plasmodiophorid Polymyxa betae. The virus is transmitted when the zoospores of the fungus penetrate the root hairs of the beet plant. Due to the extreme longevity of Polymyxa betae resting spores, the virus can remain viable in the soil for over a decade, making infestation persistent.
Development and spread are favored by high soil moisture levels and temperatures between +15 °C and +25 °C. The pathogen is primarily spread by the movement of infested soil via farm machinery, flooding events, and even wind-blown dust. Once established in a field, the disease is notoriously difficult to eradicate.
The economic impact of BNYVV is profound, often leading to total crop failure in highly susceptible varieties. To manage this threat, agronomists recommend an integrated pest management approach:
- Planting genetically resistant or tolerant sugar beet hybrids.
- Adhering to strict crop rotation intervals (at least 5 years).
- Improving soil drainage to eliminate the wet conditions favorable for Polymyxa betae.
- Sanitation protocols to clean equipment moving between infested and clean fields.
