The causative agent of the disease is Beet yellows virus (BYV), which is classified under the genus Closterovirus. It is a filamentous virus containing a single-stranded RNA genome. The virus is not transmitted by seeds, mechanical sap contact, or soil, but is strictly transmitted by aphid vectors in a persistent manner.

Diseases and host range
The pathogen causes a systemic disease known as Beet yellows. Its primary host plants are various types of beets, including sugar beet, fodder beet, and red beet. Additionally, the virus infects many other plant species, particularly within the Chenopodiaceae and Brassicaceae families, which serve as crucial reservoirs for the virus during the off-season.

Biology and life cycle
The primary vectors for BYV are the peach-potato aphid (Myzus persicae) and the black bean aphid (Aphis fabae). As a persistent virus, it is acquired by aphids after feeding on an infected plant and can be transmitted for a prolonged period. Once inside the plant, the virus colonizes the phloem, effectively disrupting the translocation of nutrients and photosynthates from leaves to roots.

Developmental conditions and economic impact
The disease spreads most rapidly under warm, dry weather conditions that favor the rapid multiplication and migration of aphid populations. The economic impact is severe: infected leaves turn chlorotic, thicken, and become brittle. This systemic infection severely restricts root development and sugar accumulation, leading to substantial yield losses that can exceed 50% in untreated crops.

Control and management strategies
Effective management focuses on disrupting the disease cycle by targeting the aphid vectors:

  • Establishing spatial isolation between new sugar beet crops and old seed fields.
  • Implementing rigorous weed control programs to eliminate alternative host plants.
  • Applying targeted insecticides to manage aphid populations during peak migration periods.
  • Utilizing resistant or tolerant beet varieties to minimize the impact of the infection.
