It is a highly contagious phytopathogenic virus that causes systemic infection throughout the entire vascular system of the blueberry plant.
Host range and symptoms: The virus primarily affects cultivated highbush and lowbush blueberries. The most characteristic symptom is the rapid necrosis of blossoms and young leaves during the bloom period, which gives the plant a scorched appearance. Symptoms may vary significantly depending on the cultivar’s resistance.
Biology and cycle: BlScV is transmitted through infected nursery stock and by insect vectors, most notably the blueberry aphid Illinoia pepperi. Once introduced, the virus travels systemically throughout the host plant, concentrating in both vegetative tissues and pollen, which allows it to persist long-term.
Development conditions and impact: The virus spreads most effectively during the spring when environmental conditions favor the migration and reproduction of its aphid vectors. The economic impact is severe, as infected plants often exhibit stunted growth and a dramatic reduction in fruit set, leading to significant yield losses across commercial plantations.
