Description

Systematic position and nature of the pathogen. Boeremia exigua, previously classified within the Phoma genus, is an ascomycete fungus that acts as a significant plant pathogen. It is a cosmopolitan fungus known for its ability to adapt to diverse environments and colonize a broad host range, making it a persistent challenge in agricultural systems worldwide.

Diseases and host crops. This pathogen causes phoma blight, leaf spots, and stem lesions on numerous economically important crops. Major hosts include potato, tomato, soybean, dry beans, and linseed. The infection typically results in localized necrotic lesions that can coalesce, leading to premature leaf drop, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the collapse of entire stems.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Boeremia exigua involves the production of pycnidia, which serve as the primary source of inoculum. These survival structures persist in infested crop residues, soil, or within contaminated seed lots. Under suitable environmental conditions, pycnidia release conidia that are dispersed via rain splashes, wind, or agricultural equipment, allowing the fungus to infect healthy tissues.

Environmental requirements. The development and spread of Boeremia exigua are highly dependent on high moisture levels and moderate temperatures. Prolonged periods of leaf wetness and relative humidity above 80% are critical for spore germination and infection. Dense crop canopies that limit air movement create an ideal microenvironment for the rapid progression of the disease.

Impact and control measures. The pathogen causes significant economic losses by reducing photosynthetic capacity and compromising plant vigor. Effective control requires an integrated approach to break the infection cycle:

  • Utilizing clean, certified, and disease-free planting material.
  • Implementing long-term crop rotation to reduce soil inoculum.
  • Destroying or deeply burying crop debris to eliminate wintering sites.
  • Application of preventative fungicides when environmental conditions favor disease.
  • Managing irrigation to minimize prolonged leaf wetness duration.
