Botryodiplodia is a genus of fungi belonging to the kingdom Fungi, characterized as a significant plant pathogen. It is recognized as a causative agent of various plant diseases, including stem-end rot, dieback, and bark necrosis in a wide range of fruit and ornamental woody species. As a mitosporic fungus, it aggressively invades host tissues, particularly those weakened by environmental stress or physical injuries.

The diseases caused by this pathogen significantly impact the plant's vascular system. Symptoms often include wilting of leaves, browning of stems, and the development of dry rot in fruit, which eventually becomes covered with black pycnidia. If left unchecked, the fungus can progress rapidly, causing extensive tissue death and, in severe cases, the complete loss of the affected branch or even the entire plant.

The biology of Botryodiplodia relies on the production of pycnidia, which serve as the primary source of conidia (spores) for dissemination. These spores are spread primarily by splashing rain, wind, and contaminated tools. The pathogen is capable of overwintering in infected plant debris, including dead branches and mummified fruit, ensuring a persistent infection source for the following season in orchards and plantations.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of Botryodiplodia. High humidity and warm temperatures, typically between 20°C and 30°C, provide the necessary stimulus for spore germination and mycelial growth. Plants under stress—due to drought, nutrient deficiency, or sunscald—are particularly susceptible to colonization by the fungus, which exploits these vulnerabilities to establish deep-seated infections.

Effective disease management strategies involve the following practices:

  • Rigorous sanitation, including the pruning and removal of all dead or diseased wood.
  • Sterilization of pruning equipment between trees to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Application of protective copper-based sprays to seal pruning wounds.
  • Application of systemic fungicides during critical infection windows as specified by local IPM programs.
  • Enhancing tree vigor through balanced fertilization and appropriate irrigation to reduce susceptibility.
