Botryodiplodia oncidii is a significant fungal pathogen that primarily affects orchid species, particularly within the Oncidium alliance. Taxonomically, it is classified as a member of the Botryosphaeriaceae family. This pathogen is known for its ability to cause severe necrotic lesions on the pseudobulbs, leaves, and rhizomes of host plants, leading to significant economic losses in commercial orchid production.
The disease manifests as rapidly expanding spots that eventually result in deep-seated rot. Initially, the lesions appear water-soaked and discolored. As the pathogen matures, it produces fruiting bodies known as pycnidia, which emerge from the necrotic tissue. These structures release thousands of conidia, facilitating the spread of the infection throughout the greenhouse environment.
The life cycle of Botryodiplodia oncidii is heavily dependent on moisture and mechanical injuries. The conidia are disseminated primarily through water splashing during irrigation, wind currents, and contaminated handling tools. Once the pathogen gains entry through wounds or stomata, the mycelium rapidly colonizes the plant's vascular tissue, disrupting nutrient transport and causing cell death.
Environmental conditions characterized by high humidity, poor air circulation, and temperatures between 22°C and 28°C provide an optimal environment for the fungus to flourish. Plants kept in stagnant conditions, especially those with substrate that remains waterlogged for extended periods, are at the highest risk. Stress factors, including incorrect light levels or improper fertilization, further diminish the plant's natural defenses.
Effective management and control rely on maintaining rigorous sanitation practices and creating a hostile environment for the fungus. Early diagnosis is key to preventing the total loss of valuable specimens.
- Promptly prune and discard infected plant tissues using sterilized tools to prevent the spread of spores.
- Apply systemic fungicides containing thiophanate-methyl or copper-based compounds to treat active infections.
