Botryosphaeria dothidea is a significant fungal pathogen belonging to the Botryosphaeriaceae family. It is a widely distributed ascomycete fungus known for infecting a broad range of woody plants, including apple, pear, grapevine, pistachio, and walnut trees, causing severe tissue necrosis and vascular system disruption.

The fungus is primarily associated with diseases known as bark canker, shoot blight, and fruit rot. Symptoms include dark, sunken lesions on the bark, internal discoloration of the wood, branch dieback, and in some cases, stunted fruit growth or decay. If left untreated, these infections can lead to the systemic decline and eventual death of the host tree.

The life cycle involves both sexual (perithecia) and asexual (pycnidia) stages, allowing the fungus to survive in dead wood, bark crevices, and infected twigs. Spores are released during wet weather and are disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and insects. Infection typically occurs through natural openings, pruning wounds, or areas weakened by abiotic stress like heat or drought.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity, warm temperatures, and prolonged moisture on plant surfaces are ideal for the propagation and infection process. Trees under water stress or those experiencing significant temperature fluctuations are particularly susceptible, as their natural defense mechanisms are often compromised, facilitating the colonization of the fungus.

Management of this pathogen requires an integrated approach to maintain tree vigor and reduce inoculum levels:

  • Pruning and removing symptomatic branches to minimize the source of inoculum.
  • Sanitizing pruning tools regularly to prevent cross-contamination between healthy and infected trees.
  • Applying copper-based or systemic fungicides as part of a seasonal spray program.
  • Ensuring proper irrigation and fertilization to mitigate tree stress and enhance plant immunity.
