Botryosphaeria obtusa
Botryosphaeria obtusa
Description
Botryosphaeria obtusa is an ascomycete fungus belonging to the order Botryosphaeriales. It is a significant plant pathogen known primarily for causing black rot and limb canker diseases on various woody plants, with apple and pear trees being the most economically impacted hosts.
The fungus is responsible for several distinct symptoms: fruit rot, leaf spot, and trunk or limb cankers. On fruits, the disease typically manifests as small, depressed purple or black spots that expand into circular lesions, often leading to the entire fruit becoming mummified. Cankers on branches cause tissue death, which can girdle limbs and ultimately lead to the death of the entire tree.
The life cycle of the pathogen is complex, involving both sexual and asexual stages. The fungus overwinters as mycelium and fruiting bodies (pycnidia and pseudothecia) within dead wood or infected fruit mummies. During periods of rain and high humidity, spores are released and dispersed by splashing water, wind, and insects to infect healthy tree parts through wounds, pruning cuts, or natural openings.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of Botryosphaeria obtusa. High temperatures combined with frequent precipitation facilitate the germination and infection process. Trees that are already stressed due to drought, winter injury, or poor management practices are significantly more susceptible to infection compared to healthy, vigorous trees.
Effective management and control strategies rely on a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Key practices include:
- Pruning and removing infected branches or cankered wood to reduce the inoculum source.
- Ensuring proper sanitation by removing all mummified fruits from the orchard.
- Applying fungicides during critical growth stages, especially during bloom and fruit set.
- Protecting the trees from environmental stress and mechanical injuries.
- Monitoring the orchard regularly to identify early symptoms and take immediate corrective action.
