Bramble yellow

Bramble yellow is a viral disease caused by the Bramble yellow vein virus (BYVV), which affects members of the Rubus genus. Systematically, the pathogen belongs to the group of plant viruses transmitted by hemipteran insects, posing a significant threat to commercial and garden blackberry and raspberry plantations.

The primary symptoms of the disease include characteristic chlorotic spotting and yellowing of the leaf veins. Affected plants exhibit stunted growth, thinning of shoots, and a significant decrease in yields due to impaired photosynthesis and metabolic processes within the aerial parts of the shrub.

The biology of the pathogen is closely tied to its vector, the aphid. The virus is transmitted primarily by sap-sucking insects, such as Amphorophora rubi. In its development cycle, the virus persists in the tissues of the infected plant throughout the growing season and overwinters in the root system and perennial plant structures.

Conditions for the active spread of Bramble yellow are favored by high population densities of aphid vectors during the spring and summer. The disease spreads more rapidly in dense plantings with poor air circulation and a lack of pruning practices, creating an ideal microclimate for pest proliferation.

Control measures require an integrated approach, including: the use of certified virus-free planting stock, regular field monitoring, and timely insecticide applications to manage aphid populations. Effective control cannot be achieved without the prompt removal and destruction of infected plants to prevent the further spread of the virus within the crop area.
