This parasitic fungus primarily targets ornamental shrubs of the Ericaceae family, most notably azaleas and rhododendrons. It is the primary cause of a condition often referred to as "bud blast," which leads to the severe degradation of floral buds and young foliage.

The disease manifests as necrotic lesions on flower buds, which eventually turn black, shrivel, and fail to open. In severe cases, the pathogen can spread to the leaves and tender stems, causing significant cosmetic damage and reducing the overall vigor of the shrub. Because the fungus thrives on the parts of the plant intended for reproduction, it is particularly devastating to the aesthetic value of the garden.

The lifecycle of Briosia azalea is heavily dependent on environmental moisture levels. The pathogen overwinters as mycelium and fungal spores within dead or infected plant debris, including mummified buds and fallen leaves on the ground. When spring arrives with rising temperatures and consistent moisture, the fungus initiates sporulation, releasing conidia that spread through wind currents, rain splashing, or physical contact with insects.

Development and spread are most aggressive under conditions of high humidity, frequent rainfall, and poor airflow within the shrub's canopy. In these humid microclimates, the fungus can proliferate rapidly, leading to significant outbreaks in a relatively short period. Without intervention, the infected plant remains a reservoir for the pathogen to thrive throughout the entire growing season.

Effective management and control strategies for this pathogen involve an integrated approach:

  • Strict sanitation measures, including the regular removal and destruction of infected buds and foliage.
  • Frequent cleaning of the area beneath the shrubs to remove leaf litter and potential overwintering sites.
  • Optimizing plant spacing to ensure proper air circulation and reduce humidity in the foliage.
  • Applying appropriate fungicide treatments, particularly copper-based or systemic products, during the early stages of bud development.
