Description

Botrytis fabae is a destructive fungal pathogen belonging to the order Helotiales. It is primarily known as the causal agent of "chocolate spot," a major disease of faba beans (Vicia faba). This fungus is highly host-specific, causing significant economic losses in legume production globally, particularly in temperate climates with high rainfall.

The disease typically begins with the appearance of small, reddish-brown circular spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots expand into large, dark-brown necrotic lesions. Under severe infestation, the pathogen spreads to the stems and pods, leading to defoliation, stem lodging, and significant reduction in seed yield and quality.

The biological cycle of Botrytis fabae relies on its ability to produce abundant conidia (asexual spores) which are wind-dispersed. The fungus survives unfavorable conditions as sclerotia—hardened masses of mycelium—located in soil debris or on infected plant remains. During favorable weather conditions, these sclerotia produce more conidia to start a new infection cycle.

Epidemics are driven by high humidity and moderate temperatures, typically ranging from 15°C to 22°C. Wet, overcast weather with frequent rain showers facilitates the germination of spores and the penetration of fungal hyphae into the plant tissue. Crowded plantings with poor ventilation are particularly susceptible to rapid disease spread.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Essential control measures include the use of resistant or tolerant cultivars and crop rotation schemes that avoid planting host legumes in the same area for at least three years. Chemical control involves the timely application of fungicides, particularly before the canopy closes, to prevent the onset and secondary spread of the disease.
