Byssus herbarum is a fungal microorganism historically classified as a common mould agent. In contemporary agronomy, it is identified as a facultative parasite or saprotroph that thrives on organic matter. While it primarily colonizes decaying plant tissues, it can act as a pathogen under specific environmental stressors, compromising the health of agricultural crops.
The pathogen affects a wide range of host plants, particularly cereals, legumes, and various technical crops. The visible symptoms of infection involve the appearance of a loose, web-like or felt-like mycelium mat on the plant surface.
