San Jose scale

California

Description

The San Jose scale (Latin: Quadraspidiotus perniciosus) is a destructive armored scale insect that serves as a major agricultural pest. While it is not a pathogen in the microbial sense, its feeding habits facilitate the entry of fungal and bacterial pathogens, leading to severe tree decline and death. It is classified as a significant quarantine pest in many fruit-growing regions globally.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including apple, pear, peach, plum, and various ornamental trees. By inserting their mouthparts into the bark, leaves, and fruit, they extract sap, causing systemic weakness in the tree. The characteristic red spots on fruit and the cracking of bark are primary symptoms that distinguish an infestation by this scale species.

The biology of Quadraspidiotus perniciosus is defined by its ability to overwinter as first-instar nymphs on the bark of host plants. As temperatures rise in the spring, the nymphs mature. The females are viviparous, and depending on the latitude, the pest can complete multiple generations per growing season. This rapid reproductive rate allows populations to explode in a very short timeframe.

Developmental conditions are heavily influenced by climate, with warmer regions favoring multiple generations and higher survival rates. The pest spreads primarily through the movement of infested nursery stock. Once introduced, the tiny mobile "crawlers" can be distributed throughout an orchard by wind, birds, or human maintenance activities, making containment difficult once established.

Effective management strategies require a combination of chemical and cultural practices to reduce pressure and protect the crop:

  • Strict phytosanitary inspection of all incoming nursery trees and graft wood.
  • Application of dormant oil sprays to smother overwintering nymphs on bark.
  • Timed application of systemic or contact insecticides during the crawler emergence phase.
  • Pruning out heavily infested wood to reduce local population reservoirs.
  • Utilizing pheromone traps for precise timing of treatment windows.
