Description

Camarosporium pistaciae is a pathogenic fungus within the Ascomycota phylum, recognized as the primary agent responsible for kamarosporiosis in pistachio trees (Pistacia vera). This pathogen specializes in infecting the aerial parts of the tree, such as shoots, leaves, and developing fruits, potentially causing significant economic losses in nut production.

The disease manifests as necrotic lesions on foliage, which eventually lead to premature defoliation. On stems and twigs, the fungus causes sunken cankers and bark cracking, which can lead to branch dieback. When fruits are affected, they often develop distinct dark spots, lose quality, and may prematurely drop from the tree, drastically reducing the harvest yield.

The biological cycle begins with the fungus overwintering in infected plant debris or within the bark tissues of the host. In spring, when environmental conditions become favorable, pycnidia release conidia. These spores are disseminated via wind, rain splashes, or through mechanical transfer, leading to primary infections on new vegetative growth.

High humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 20°C to 26°C are the critical environmental factors that trigger the development and spread of Camarosporium pistaciae. Orchards with poor air circulation or those relying on overhead irrigation are particularly vulnerable, as prolonged leaf wetness facilitates the infection process of the fungal spores.

Effective control strategies focus on integrated pest management:

  • Strict sanitation by pruning and destroying infected plant tissue.
  • Application of copper-based fungicides during dormancy to reduce inoculum levels.
  • Implementation of proper tree pruning to improve air circulation within the canopy.
  • Selection of resistant varieties and ensuring balanced irrigation practices to avoid excessive moisture.
