Citrus sooty mold
Capnodium citricola
Description
Taxonomic classification and nature of the pathogen
Capnodium citricola belongs to the kingdom Fungi, genus Capnodium. It is a phytopathogenic fungus that causes a condition known as sooty mold. Unlike invasive fungi that penetrate plant tissue, this organism is an epiphyte, meaning it colonizes the surface of leaves, stems, and fruits without directly infecting the internal structures of the host plant.
Diseases and susceptible crops
The pathogen primarily affects citrus crops such as lemons, oranges, and mandarins. It appears as a dark, soot-like film covering the surface of foliage and fruit. While the fungus itself does not feed on the plant, its presence is a diagnostic indicator of underlying pest infestation and can severely degrade the aesthetic and economic value of the harvest.
Biology and life cycle
The development of Capnodium citricola is entirely dependent on sap-sucking insects like aphids, scale insects, and mealybugs. These insects excrete honeydew—a sugary, viscous substance that provides the necessary nutrients for the fungus to grow. Spores are disseminated by wind or insect vectors, leading to rapid colonization of the affected areas.
Development conditions and damage
The fungus thrives in warm, humid environments with poor air circulation. The primary damage is indirect: the dense, black fungal mat acts as a physical barrier, blocking sunlight and reducing the efficiency of photosynthesis. In severe cases, this leads to premature leaf drop, stunted development, and reduced vigor of the citrus trees.
Protection and control measures
- Implement integrated pest management (IPM) to control sap-sucking insects.
- Prune trees to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration within the canopy.
- Wash affected foliage with a mild soap solution to manually remove the fungal coating.
- Apply horticultural oils or appropriate fungicides to manage both the insects and the fungus.
- Monitor citrus groves regularly for early signs of honeydew or pest colonies.
