Carnation mottle virus

Carnation mottle

Description

Systematic Classification: Carnation mottle virus (CarMV) is a major plant pathogen classified under the genus Carmovirus within the Alphaflexiviridae family. As a single-stranded RNA virus, it is recognized globally as a primary threat to floral crops, particularly those belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family, causing significant physiological stress in infected plants.

Host Range and Symptomatology: The primary host is the carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus). While many infections remain asymptomatic or latent, some varieties exhibit characteristic mosaic patterns, leaf mottling, and slight distortions of the flowers. This latency makes it particularly dangerous, as infected plants may appear healthy while actively spreading the virus throughout a greenhouse facility.

Biology and Transmission: The virus is highly contagious through mechanical transmission. There is no known insect vector; instead, it is spread primarily by human activity, including pruning, cutting, and handling of plants. The virus is exceptionally stable in plant sap and can survive on surfaces of tools, benches, and clothes, facilitating its rapid movement through commercial operations.

Environmental Factors: The spread of CarMV is favored by high-density planting and repetitive manual handling, which are common in modern greenhouse cultivation. Environmental conditions, such as high humidity, can support the survival of the virus on contaminated surfaces, increasing the likelihood of infection during standard horticultural tasks.

Management and Control: There are no chemical cures for viral infections in plants, making sanitation the cornerstone of management. Growers must focus on exclusion and containment.

  • Sourcing certified virus-free propagating material derived from meristem culture.
  • Rigorous sterilization of all cutting tools and equipment using approved disinfectants.
  • Routinely roguing and destroying symptomatic plants to eliminate the inoculum source.
  • Implementing strict hygiene protocols for staff working among different crop cohorts.
