Description

Carnation ringspot, caused by the Carnation ringspot virus (CRSV), is a significant viral pathogen within the genus Dianthovirus and the family Tombusviridae. This pathogen is globally recognized for its ability to severely impact the growth and ornamental value of various Dianthus species, posing a persistent challenge to commercial floriculture.

The disease primarily manifests as chlorotic or necrotic rings, spots, and mosaic patterns on the leaves of infected plants. As the infection progresses systemically, it often results in severe leaf distortion, stunting of the main stems, and a reduction in both the size and quality of the flowers. Plants infected at an early stage may fail to produce marketable blooms entirely.

Regarding its biology and development cycle, the virus is highly infectious and is readily transmitted through mechanical means, such as the use of contaminated pruning tools. Additionally, the virus can persist in the soil and may be spread through root-to-root contact or via soil-borne vectors such as nematodes. Its stability outside the host plant allows it to survive in plant debris, complicating sanitation efforts.

Environmental conditions that favor the spread of CRSV include high humidity and moderate temperatures typically found in greenhouse production systems. Because the virus is systemic, it accumulates throughout the plant tissues, and high-density planting facilitates rapid transmission from symptomatic plants to healthy neighbors through accidental wounding or handling.

The economic damage caused by this pathogen is significant, as it leads to widespread crop loss and degradation of quality. Effective control requires a multi-faceted approach:

  • Procuring certified, virus-free planting material from reliable laboratories.
  • Strict adherence to hygiene protocols, including the disinfection of tools with effective virucides.
  • Systematic roguing and destruction of infected plants to reduce inoculum.
  • Implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) to control nematode populations and other potential mechanical carriers.
