Description
Cassava common mosaic virus (CsCMV) is a significant plant pathogenic virus belonging to the Potexvirus genus within the Alphaflexiviridae family. It primarily affects cassava (Manihot esculenta), a critical staple crop, causing widespread yield losses in various tropical agricultural systems.
The virus particles are flexuous filaments that spread systemically throughout the host plant. By invading the vascular tissue, the virus interferes with the plant's metabolic functions, specifically targeting the chloroplasts and disrupting the essential process of photosynthesis necessary for tuber development.
Symptoms are manifested through distinct mosaic patterns on leaves, characterized by chlorotic vein banding and vein clearing. Infected plants often exhibit reduced leaf size, distorted growth patterns, and overall stunted development, which directly correlates to a decreased harvest weight and poor tuber quality.
Transmission of CsCMV is primarily mechanical, occurring through contact between infected and healthy plants, or via contaminated agricultural tools during pruning and harvesting. Unlike some other viruses, this specific virus is generally not transmitted by insect vectors such as whiteflies, making human intervention and sanitation the key factors in its spread.
