Centrospora acerina is a significant fungal pathogen that belongs to the kingdom Fungi and class Exobasidiomycetes. This organism is primarily recognized as the causal agent of "licorice rot," a disease that affects a wide variety of umbelliferous crops, most notably carrots, parsnips, and celery. It thrives in cool, damp conditions, making it a persistent threat in temperate regions.

The disease manifests as dark, sunken lesions on the crown and taproot of host plants. On leaves, it can cause spotting and blight, leading to rapid deterioration of the foliage. In severe cases, the entire root tissue becomes soft and discolored, which is why the condition is commonly referred to as licorice rot, given the dark, characteristic appearance of the infected areas.

The biology of Centrospora acerina is heavily dependent on moisture. The fungus produces conidia that are disseminated through splashing water from irrigation or rainfall. It can overwinter as mycelium or chlamydospores in soil debris or infected plant remains. Once environmental conditions become favorable, usually during cool and humid periods, the pathogen initiates new infections on emerging crops.

The economic impact of this pathogen is severe, particularly during the post-harvest stage. Because the fungus can continue to grow at storage temperatures, it often leads to significant decay in warehouse environments. This secondary infection risk means that a single infected root can spread the rot throughout an entire bin, leading to substantial losses for farmers and processors.

  • Practice crop rotation with non-host plants to reduce soil inoculum levels.
  • Ensure proper field drainage to prevent excess moisture around the base of plants.
  • Remove and destroy all crop residues after harvest to minimize overwintering sites.
  • Avoid over-irrigation during the cooler months when the pathogen is most active.
  • Use certified, pathogen-free seeds and consider fungicide treatments as a preventative measure.
