While it can exist saprophytically in soil debris, it transforms into a parasite under favorable conditions, infecting host tissues.
Diseases and host crops: This pathogen is primarily responsible for cephalosporium wilt, a disease that affects a variety of crops, most notably maize (corn), wheat, and barley. It acts by colonizing the xylem, which disrupts the hydraulic conductivity of the plant's vascular system, leading to characteristic yellowing, wilting, and eventually the death of plant segments or the entire stalk.
Biology and life cycle: The fungus survives in soil, decaying crop residues, or infected seeds. Infection generally occurs through roots that have been wounded by insects, nematodes, or mechanical agricultural practices.
