It is primarily recognized as the causative agent of vascular wilt, targeting various species within the Asteraceae family. This pathogen specializes in colonizing the host's vascular tissues, specifically the xylem, which is critical for water and nutrient distribution.

The disease manifests as progressive wilting, where the plant gradually loses turgidity and vigor. As the fungal mycelium proliferates inside the vessels, it creates physical blockages and excretes toxic metabolites that disrupt the plant's physiological functions. This typically leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and eventual death of the affected plant if left untreated.

Regarding its biology, Cephalosporium asteris survives in the soil as a saprophyte or in dormant structures like chlamydospores. Infection typically occurs through root hairs or wounds caused by soil-dwelling insects and mechanical cultivation practices. Once inside the root system, the pathogen moves systemically through the plant via the vascular bundles, proliferating rapidly under moist soil conditions and moderate temperatures.

Because the fungus remains viable in the soil for several years, it creates a high-risk environment that makes traditional planting rotations ineffective.   • Strict sanitation protocols to remove infected plant material and root systems.
  • Soil solarization or steaming prior to planting in greenhouses.
  • Application of systemic fungicides as a preventive measure during the seedling stage.
  • Using sterilized potting media and high-quality certified seeds.
  • Promoting soil health with organic amendments that encourage beneficial microbial activity to suppress pathogen growth.
