Description
Ceratobasidium setariae is a basidiomycetous fungus belonging to the order Cantharellales. As a plant pathogen, it is responsible for various diseases such as leaf blight and spot diseases on a wide range of economically important hosts, including forage grasses, cereals, and several other monocotyledonous crops.
The disease typically manifests as irregular spots on the leaves, which rapidly enlarge and turn brown. In high-humidity environments, a delicate, web-like mycelial growth may appear on the underside of the leaves. As the infection progresses, the lesions coalesce, leading to severe chlorosis, necrotic tissue death, and significant reduction in the photosynthetic capacity of the plant.
The biological cycle of the fungus is characterized by its ability to survive in plant debris or soil as dormant mycelium. Under favorable environmental conditions, the pathogen produces basidiospores that are disseminated by wind or rain splash. These spores act as primary inoculum, infecting new hosts and establishing the disease within the crop canopy during the growing season.
Development and propagation are highly dependent on environmental factors. The pathogen thrives in warm and humid conditions, with optimal disease progression occurring between 20°C and 28°C and humidity levels above 80%. Dense canopy structure, poor air circulation, and frequent rainfall significantly enhance the spread of the fungus throughout the field.
Economic damage is caused by the reduction of green leaf area, which limits grain filling and biomass accumulation. To effectively manage this pathogen, agronomists recommend integrated pest management strategies. These include the removal of crop residues, rotating susceptible crops with non-hosts, applying preventative fungicides, and ensuring adequate spacing to promote foliage drying and reduce infection risk.
