Ceratocystis moniliformis is a microscopic fungal pathogen belonging to the genus Ceratocystis. As an ascomycete, it acts as an aggressive colonizer of plant tissues, particularly affecting the vascular and wood-forming systems. It is widely recognized in plant pathology for its ability to cause systemic infections that compromise the physiological integrity of its hosts.

The fungus is primarily responsible for vascular wilts, stem cankers, and wood rot in a variety of woody plants and certain agricultural crops. By invading the xylem, the pathogen disrupts the upward transport of water and nutrients, which inevitably leads to leaf wilting, chlorosis, and in advanced stages, the total necrosis of the plant structure.

Favorable conditions include high moisture levels, which trigger spore germination, and the presence of open wounds or pruning cuts on the host plant. Once established, the fungus spreads rapidly through the sapwood, creating a conducive environment for further colonization.
