The pathogen Cercospora concors belongs to the Fungi kingdom and is a specialized phytopathogen that primarily affects plants of the Solanaceae family, with potatoes being the most significant host. As an imperfect fungus, it thrives by exploiting the leaf tissues of its host plant to complete its reproductive cycle.
The disease caused by this pathogen is commonly known as Cercospora leaf spot. Symptoms include the formation of pale green to brown, often angular or circular spots on the foliage. Under humid conditions, a distinct grayish-purple fungal growth appears on the undersides of the leaves, which corresponds to the conidiophores and conidia of the fungus.
The biology of the pathogen relies on its ability to survive between seasons in crop residues left in the soil. Once the growing season begins, the overwintered mycelium produces conidia, which are then disseminated via wind, splashing rain, or physical contact. These spores penetrate the leaf tissues, initiating new infection sites that quickly multiply under favorable environmental conditions.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on humidity and temperature. Frequent rainfall and temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C are ideal for the rapid spread of the fungus. When conditions remain favorable for extended periods, the leaf spot can cause severe defoliation, significantly reducing the plant's capacity for photosynthesis and nutrient accumulation.
Economic damage is caused by reduced tuber size and lower overall crop quality due to the premature senescence of the canopy. Effective management strategies focus on preventing the buildup of inoculum: proper crop rotation, deep plowing to bury infested residues, and the application of fungicides at the first sign of infection are essential for maintaining healthy and productive potato fields.
