Cercospora sojina is a specialized fungal pathogen belonging to the kingdom Fungi, genus Cercospora. It is the causative agent of frogeye leaf spot, a significant disease affecting soybean crops worldwide, which primarily targets leaves but can also infect stems, pods, and seeds, impacting overall crop yield and grain quality.
The primary clinical symptoms of the disease include the appearance of small, circular or angular spots on the leaves. These spots usually have a gray or light-colored center surrounded by a narrow, dark reddish-brown margin, resembling the eye of a frog. As the infection progresses, these lesions can expand and merge, leading to premature leaf drop and reduced photosynthetic efficiency.
The life cycle of the pathogen is highly dependent on environmental reservoirs. The fungus overwinters as mycelium and conidia on infected crop debris left on the soil surface or within contaminated seeds. During the growing season, in the presence of moisture, these spores are disseminated by wind and splashing rain to healthy soybean plants, initiating primary and secondary infection cycles.
The development of frogeye leaf spot is favored by warm, humid conditions. Temperatures between 25°C and 30°C, combined with prolonged periods of leaf wetness or high relative humidity (above 80%), create an ideal environment for rapid sporulation and disease spread. Outbreaks are often more severe in continuous soybean cropping systems where inoculum levels remain high.
The economic damage caused by Cercospora sojina can be substantial, as severe infection reduces the plant's ability to fill pods, leading to smaller, discolored, and poor-quality beans. To effectively mitigate this disease, farmers should employ an integrated management approach: rotation with non-host crops, deep tillage to bury crop residues, the use of certified disease-free seeds, and the application of foliar fungicides during the R1 to R3 growth stages if environmental conditions are conducive to disease development.
