Cercospora leaf spot of beans
Cercospora zonata
Description
Cercospora zonata is a destructive fungal pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota phylum and the genus Cercospora. It is primarily known as the causal agent of zonated leaf spot in fava beans (Vicia faba) and other related legume species. As a specialized pathogen, it exploits the host's tissues to complete its life cycle, causing significant physiological stress to the plant.
The characteristic symptoms of the disease appear as circular or irregular spots on the leaves. These lesions typically show a light-colored center surrounded by a dark border, often exhibiting concentric zoning patterns that give the disease its common name. In humid weather, the centers of these lesions become covered with an olive-gray fungal mat composed of conidiophores and conidia, which serves as the source for subsequent infections.
The pathogen overwinters as mycelium in infected plant debris, soil, or seeds. When environmental conditions become favorable, the fungus produces conidia, which are disseminated by wind, rain splashes, or insects. The infection process begins when these spores land on susceptible host tissue, germinate, and penetrate through the stomata or epidermal cell walls, establishing a parasitic relationship with the plant.
Environmental conditions are critical for the spread of Cercospora zonata. The fungus thrives in warm, humid climates, with optimal temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C. High leaf wetness duration, caused by frequent rain, heavy dew, or overhead irrigation, significantly promotes spore germination and lesion development, potentially leading to rapid spread within a field if left unmanaged.
The economic impact of this pathogen is reflected in reduced photosynthetic area, premature defoliation, and decreased pod and seed quality. Effective management strategies involve a multi-faceted approach:
- Utilizing certified, disease-free seeds.
- Implementing crop rotation cycles of at least three years.
- Managing crop residues through deep tillage to bury inoculum sources.
- Applying registered systemic fungicides during the early stages of disease onset to suppress further spread.
