Cercosporella leaf spot

Cercosporella brassicae

Description

Systematic position and nature of the pathogen
Cercosporella brassicae is a fungal pathogen classified within the group of mitosporic fungi (deuteromycetes). Often synonymized or associated with the genus Pseudocercosporella, this fungus functions as an obligate parasite specifically targeting members of the Brassicaceae (cruciferous) family.

Symptoms and host crops
The disease is characterized by the appearance of white to light-gray necrotic spots on leaves, typically surrounded by a darker, defined margin. Primary host crops include oilseed rape (canola), cabbage, mustard, and radish. In severe cases, the necrotic tissue within the lesions becomes brittle and may drop out, leading to shot-hole symptoms and premature senescence of the plant foliage.

Biology and disease cycle
The fungus survives the off-season as mycelium or conidia within crop debris left in the soil. During the growing season, conidia are dispersed by wind, splashing rain, or agricultural machinery. Once they land on susceptible tissue, they penetrate the leaf epidermis, establishing the infection that leads to secondary spread throughout the field under favorable environmental conditions.

Developmental conditions and impact
Cercosporella brassicae thrives in high humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C. The economic impact of the pathogen is significant, as it reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. This leads to a substantial loss in yield, reduced oil content in seed crops, and diminished marketability of fresh produce.

Protection and control measures
Effective management relies on an integrated approach:

  • Implementing strict crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
  • Ploughing down or destroying crop residues to reduce primary inoculum.
  • Controlling wild cruciferous weeds that serve as alternative hosts.
  • Applying targeted fungicide treatments when disease pressure becomes significant, particularly during wet, cool seasons.
