Cercosporidium henningsii

Cercosporidium henningsii

Description

Cercosporidium henningsii (synonym Passalora henningsii) is a fungal pathogen belonging to the kingdom Fungi, responsible for causing brown leaf spot disease in cassava (Manihot esculenta). As a specialized plant pathogen, it primarily affects the foliage, leading to premature leaf senescence and significant reduction in photosynthetic capacity.

The disease is characterized by the appearance of discrete brown spots on the leaf surface, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. As the infection progresses, these spots may enlarge and coalesce, eventually turning gray due to the development of fungal conidia. The presence of these spots is the primary diagnostic indicator for farmers in affected tropical regions.

The pathogen's life cycle is driven by asexual spores known as conidia, which are disseminated primarily by rain splash and wind currents. The fungus survives unfavorable periods in infected crop debris left on the field or in the soil. Upon germination, the conidia penetrate the leaf tissue, establishing a mycelial network that draws nutrients from the host plant.

Epidemiological development is heavily dependent on moisture and temperature. Warm, humid climates with frequent rainfall provide the perfect environment for the rapid germination of conidia and the infection of new leaf tissues. High humidity acts as a catalyst, allowing the fungus to spread across entire fields in a short timeframe during the rainy season.

The economic impact of Cercosporidium henningsii is significant, particularly in subsistence and commercial farming. Defoliation caused by the infection forces the plant to divert energy away from tuber development to repair foliage, resulting in smaller root sizes and lower total starch yields. Severe outbreaks can lead to total crop failure if left unmanaged.

  • Sanitation: Removing and burning infected plant debris.
  • Crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle in the soil.
  • Using resistant or tolerant cassava cultivars.
  • Timely application of appropriate fungicides during humid seasons.
  • Optimizing planting density to ensure adequate airflow and reduce leaf wetness.
