Description
Chaetomium is a genus of fungi belonging to the phylum Ascomycota and the order Sordariales. While many species are known for their ability to decompose cellulose, some act as opportunistic plant pathogens. In agricultural settings, they are commonly identified as agents of seed decay and seedling blight, particularly when seeds are subjected to high moisture levels or improper storage conditions.
The primary crops affected by Chaetomium include cereals such as wheat, barley, and various legumes. The pathogen mainly targets seeds, leading to surface moulding and internal tissue degradation. This infection interferes with the physiological processes of germination, often resulting in reduced seedling vigor, root rot, or complete failure of the seeds to germinate after planting.
The biology of Chaetomium is characterized by the production of perithecia, which are fruiting bodies covered in distinctive, often branched, hairs. These structures are crucial for the fungus's survival and dispersal. Spores (ascospores) are spread via air currents, water splashes, or contaminated agricultural equipment. The fungus persists in the soil and on crop debris, serving as a primary source of inoculum for subsequent seasons.
Favorable conditions for the development of Chaetomium include high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. In storage facilities, poor aeration allows moisture to accumulate, creating an ideal environment for rapid colonization by the fungus. As the pathogen breaks down cellulose, it can produce secondary metabolites, including mycotoxins, which can compromise the quality of the grain and pose risks to livestock if the grain is used for feed.
Effective management and control of Chaetomium involve a multi-faceted approach to limit the pathogen's impact:
- Application of systemic seed treatment fungicides to protect young seedlings from early infection.
- Ensuring proper post-harvest drying and storage conditions with constant moisture monitoring.
- Implementing crop rotation to prevent the build-up of inoculum in the soil.
- Removing plant residues from the field to reduce overwintering sites for the fungus.
