The pathogen predominantly targets cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and rye, although it can affect a wide variety of plants. Chaetomium elatum is most frequently identified by the presence of mold growth on seeds during storage or on germinating seeds in the soil. It severely impacts crop establishment by colonizing seeds and causing pre-emergence damping-off.
The life cycle of this fungus involves the production of perithecia, which are dark, flask-shaped fruiting bodies adorned with distinct setae (hairs). These structures facilitate the release and dispersal of ascospores into the environment via air currents or water splash. The fungus persists in the soil and on crop debris, making it a persistent threat in agricultural fields.
Optimal conditions for Chaetomium elatum development include high humidity levels (typically above 70-80%) and moderate temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. When these conditions coincide with poorly ventilated storage environments or waterlogged field soils, the fungus proliferates rapidly, leading to substantial agricultural losses.
Damage caused by this pathogen includes reduced seed viability, uneven crop stands, and stunted growth in seedlings. To mitigate the risks associated with this fungus, agronomic practices should focus on:
