Cherry leaf spot

Cherry leaf

Description

The causal agent of the destructive cherry leaf spot disease is the fungus Blumeriella jaapii (anamorph Cylindrosporium hiemale). Classified as an ascomycete, this pathogen specifically targets cherry and sour cherry trees. It is one of the most significant fungal threats to stone fruit production, particularly in regions with humid and cool spring or summer climates.

The infection manifests as small, dark purple or reddish spots on the upper leaf surface. As the disease progresses, these spots expand, often coalescing and turning necrotic. On the underside of the leaves, white to pinkish fungal sporulation pads develop. Heavy infection leads to leaf yellowing (chlorosis) and premature defoliation, which severely taxes the health of the host tree.

The life cycle begins with the fungus overwintering in fallen, infected leaves on the orchard floor. In early spring, during wet periods, the fungus releases ascospores that initiate primary infections on emerging leaves. Throughout the summer, conidia are produced and dispersed by rain splash and wind, allowing the pathogen to undergo multiple infection cycles if conditions remain humid.

The damage caused by this pathogen is cumulative. By inducing premature leaf drop, the fungus prevents the tree from synthesizing sufficient carbohydrates for winter survival and fruit bud development. This weakens the tree's vigor and significantly reduces its cold tolerance, often resulting in severe winter injury or total death of the tree after a particularly harsh season.

Management of cherry leaf spot requires an integrated approach to reduce inoculum levels and prevent recurring infections:

  • Sanitation: Raking and removing fallen leaves in autumn to eliminate overwintering sites.
  • Cultural practices: Pruning to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration within the canopy.
  • Chemical control: Applying protective and systemic fungicides according to local pest management guidelines.
  • Monitoring: Scouting for the first signs of symptoms during early spring to time fungicide applications accurately.
