Chickpea distortion is a severe viral disease affecting chickpea (Cicer arietinum), characterized by distinct morphological alterations in plant tissue. As a viral pathogen, it interferes with the normal hormonal balance and metabolic processes of the host plant, leading to stunted growth and yield failure.
The disease symptoms typically include leaf distortion, curling, chlorosis, and severe dwarfing of the entire plant. In many cases, infected plants fail to produce healthy pods, or the pods themselves appear malformed and empty, significantly reducing the overall harvest quality and quantity.
The biological cycle of the pathogen is entirely dependent on insect vectors, primarily aphids. The virus is acquired by the aphid during feeding on infected plants and is transmitted in a persistent or semi-persistent manner to healthy plants during subsequent feeding events.
Environmental conditions that favor aphid population outbreaks, such as mild temperatures and high humidity, significantly accelerate the spread of Chickpea distortion. The virus often persists in weed reservoirs or volunteer legume plants throughout the off-season, acting as a primary source of inoculum.
