Chickpea stunt is a significant viral disease complex affecting chickpea (Cicer arietinum) crops, primarily caused by viruses within the Geminiviridae family, such as Chickpea chlorotic dwarf virus (CpCDV). This pathogen acts as a systemic parasite, causing severe physiological disturbances that impede the plant's ability to grow and produce pods.

The disease impacts various legume species but is most economically devastating in chickpeas. Typical symptoms include severe stunting of the plant, chlorosis (yellowing) of leaves, reddening of foliage, and a proliferation of lateral shoots that results in a bushy appearance. Infected plants often fail to reach maturity or produce any viable seeds.

The biology of Chickpea stunt is intrinsically linked to its insect vectors, most notably leafhoppers like Orosius albicinctus. The virus is transmitted in a persistent, circulative manner. Once the vector acquires the virus by feeding on an infected plant, it remains infectious for the remainder of its life, effectively spreading the pathogen as it moves between plants.

Environmental factors heavily influence the spread of the disease. Hot and dry weather conditions are ideal for the development and migration of leafhoppers. These insects often migrate from wild weed hosts—which act as reservoirs—into commercial fields. Consequently, the incidence of the disease is usually higher at the edges of fields and during peak summer temperatures.

Economic damage is substantial, as infected fields can suffer near-total yield losses. Management focuses on disrupting the disease cycle and reducing vector contact with the host crop. Key strategies include:

  • Effective weed control to eliminate virus reservoirs surrounding the fields.
  • Timely application of insecticides to manage leafhopper populations during high-risk periods.
  • Selecting and planting resistant or tolerant chickpea cultivars.
  • Implementing appropriate spatial isolation between current and previous season legume crops.
