Description

Chickpea yellows is a significant plant disease caused by specialized phytoplasmas, which are wall-less bacteria residing in the plant's phloem tissue. These pathogens act as systemic parasites, fundamentally altering the plant's hormonal balance and nutrient transport, which inevitably leads to a decline in the physiological health of the chickpea crop.

The disease manifests through characteristic symptoms such as yellowing of leaves (chlorosis), stunting of the plant, and abnormal growth patterns, including the proliferation of small, deformed shoots. In advanced stages, the infected plant may exhibit total failure in pod development, rendering it unproductive during the growing season.

The transmission biology of the pathogen relies entirely on insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers (Cicadellidae). The leafhopper acquires the phytoplasma while feeding on an infected plant. After a latent period during which the pathogen replicates inside the insect's body, the leafhopper becomes a vector capable of transmitting the disease to healthy plants for the rest of its life cycle.

Environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of leafhoppers significantly increase the risk of disease spread. Warm and dry weather facilitates both the migration of the vector and its reproduction, while wild hosts (such as common weeds) serve as persistent reservoirs of the phytoplasma during the off-season, ensuring the pathogen survives in the field environment.

Damage caused by chickpea yellows leads to substantial economic losses due to the total loss of yield in severely affected plants. Management of this disease requires an integrated approach to maintain crop health:

  • Elimination of weeds that act as reservoir hosts for the phytoplasma.
  • Monitoring and targeted insecticide application to manage vector populations.
  • Strategic selection of sowing dates to avoid peak leafhopper migration periods.
  • Implementation of robust crop rotation practices to break the pathogen's lifecycle.
