Chloris striate is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the genus Mastrevirus within the Geminiviridae family. As an obligate parasite, it focuses on infecting monocotyledonous plants, causing significant physiological disruptions through systemic infection. It is identified by the characteristic chlorotic striping patterns it induces on the leaves of the host plants.
The primary hosts for this pathogen include major cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and sorghum. Infection results in stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and severe leaf striping, which compromises the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. Consequently, the development of the grain is hindered, leading to shriveled kernels and significantly reduced overall yield in heavily infested fields.
The biological cycle of this pathogen is strictly dependent on its vector, the leafhopper Nesoclutha pallida. The virus is not soil-borne or seed-borne; it relies entirely on the insect for transmission. Once a leafhopper ingests the virus while feeding on an infected plant, the virus circulates within the vector's body, and the insect remains infectious for the remainder of its life, transmitting the virus to healthy plants during subsequent feeding.
Environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of the leafhopper population are the main drivers of the disease spread. Warm temperatures, moisture, and the availability of grassy weed hosts serve as ideal conditions for the vector to thrive and migrate into commercial crops. Monitoring the density of the vector population is a crucial aspect of field diagnostics to prevent widespread infection.
Effective control measures focus on an integrated approach to manage both the vector and the virus reservoir. Farmers are advised to maintain weed-free buffer zones, as many wild grasses act as symptomless carriers of the virus. Additionally, the application of systemic insecticides targeting the leafhopper populations during critical growth stages and the planting of resistant cultivars are essential strategies for mitigating economic losses in agricultural regions prone to the virus.
