Citrus variegation

Citrus variegation is a plant viral disease caused by the Citrus variegation virus (CVV), a member of the Ilarvirus genus within the Bromoviridae family. This pathogen is known to cause systemic infections in various citrus species, including lemons, oranges, and grapefruits, leading to distinct foliar symptoms and potential yield losses.

The virus primarily spreads through horticultural practices, specifically via the use of infected budwood during grafting and budding. Transmission can also occur mechanically through contaminated pruning shears or other agricultural tools. Although natural transmission through pollen or seeds has been documented, the primary pathway of disease spread in commercial orchards remains the movement of infected plant material.

Symptomatology is characterized by irregular chlorotic spots, streaks, or mosaic-like patterns on leaves, which gives the foliage a variegated appearance. Symptoms are often temperature-dependent; cooler temperatures typically favor more severe expression of leaf symptoms, while they may become masked under high-temperature conditions. Affected fruits can also show abnormal pigmentation and blemishes, reducing their aesthetic and commercial value.

The impact of the virus on plant health is significant, as it interferes with photosynthesis, leading to reduced vigor, stunted growth, and diminished yields. Severely infected trees show reduced productivity and are more susceptible to secondary stressors, such as pests or nutrient deficiencies, which can eventually lead to the economic decline of the orchard block.

Controlling Citrus variegation relies heavily on preventive management, as there are no chemical cures for infected trees. Effective strategies include:

• Utilizing only certified virus-free budwood for propagation.
• Implementing strict sanitation protocols, including the disinfection of pruning tools between trees.
• Routine surveillance and immediate removal of symptomatic trees to limit viral spread.
• Applying rigorous phytosanitary measures during the selection of rootstocks and scions.
