Classified under the genus Mandarivirus, this pathogen disrupts the internal physiology of the tree, leading to significant reductions in both fruit quantity and overall orchard longevity.
The host range of the virus includes major commercial cultivars such as lemons, oranges, and mandarins. The diagnostic symptoms typically include the clearing of leaf veins, accompanied by yellowing patterns or reticulate mottling. Over time, the viral infection leads to severe tree decline, reduced photosynthetic activity, and a marked decrease in the tree’s overall vigor and yield.
The epidemiology of the virus is driven by its primary vector, the citrus whitefly (Dialeurodes citri). Transmission occurs when the vector feeds on the sap of an infected plant and subsequently transfers the virus to healthy hosts.
