Description

Cladosporium is a genus of ubiquitous fungi that includes several significant plant pathogens. These fungi belong to the phylum Ascomycota and are known for their ability to thrive both as saprotrophs on dead organic matter and as pathogens on living plants. They are among the most common indoor and outdoor fungi, often causing substantial economic losses in commercial agriculture.

The primary disease associated with this genus is leaf mold, which affects a wide variety of crops, including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and cereals. Symptoms typically appear as irregular, pale green or yellow spots on the upper side of leaves, while the underside develops a dense, olive-brown or greyish velvety layer of conidiophores and spores, leading to premature leaf necrosis.

The biological cycle of the fungus is driven by asexual reproduction through conidia. These spores are easily dispersed by wind, splashing rain, or agricultural tools. Upon landing on a susceptible host plant, spores germinate in the presence of surface moisture and invade the plant tissue through stomata or wounds. Once established, the mycelium spreads rapidly, colonizing the leaf tissue and causing characteristic damage.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Cladosporium. The fungus thrives in high relative humidity (above 80%) and moderate temperatures between 20°C and 25°C. In greenhouse environments, poor ventilation and condensation on leaves create the perfect microclimate for an outbreak. The fungus survives unfavorable conditions as mycelium or sclerotia in soil, on plant debris, or even on greenhouse structures.

The impact of Cladosporium on plant health is severe, as the infection significantly reduces the photosynthetic leaf area, leads to defoliation, and results in a drastic decline in yield and fruit quality. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for control, involving the use of resistant varieties, crop rotation, rigorous sanitation practices to remove infected material, and the timely application of fungicides to protect the foliage during high-risk periods.
