Clethridium corticola is a specific fungal pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota division. It functions primarily as a bark-inhabiting fungus that colonizes the periderm and cortex of susceptible woody plants. As a localized necrotroph, it causes significant damage to the structural integrity of the plant's bark, often leading to the development of necrotic lesions.
The primary symptom associated with this pathogen is the formation of sunken, discolored patches on the branches and trunk, often resulting in perennial cankers. These lesions disrupt the transport of nutrients and water, which eventually leads to chlorosis and the wilting of distal parts of the plant. If the main trunk is girdled, the entire tree may succumb to the infection.
The biological cycle of the fungus is characterized by the production of fruiting bodies, known as apothecia, which typically emerge from the dead bark tissue. These structures release spores that are dispersed by wind and splashing rain. Once these spores land on an open wound or a natural crack in the bark, germination occurs, allowing the hyphae to penetrate deeper into the plant tissue.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the infection success of Clethridium corticola. The pathogen thrives in cool, humid environments where moisture remains on the bark surface for extended periods. Dense forest stands or crowded ornamental plantings with poor air circulation are particularly prone to high disease incidence, as these conditions maintain the necessary humidity for spore germination.
