Systematic position and type of pathogen: Clitocybe tabescens (often referred to in literature as Armillaria tabescens) belongs to the kingdom Fungi and the phylum Basidiomycota. It is a significant necrotrophic soil-borne pathogen responsible for white rot and severe degradation of root systems in various tree species.

Diseases and host crops: This fungus acts as a causal agent of root rot disease affecting a wide range of fruit-bearing trees, including apples, peaches, cherries, and plums. It is also a major pathogen in forestry, attacking oak and various deciduous trees, leading to significant economic losses in both managed orchards and natural ecosystems.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves the formation of rhizomorphs, which are root-like fungal structures that allow the pathogen to spread through the soil from infected roots to healthy ones. The fruiting bodies appear in dense clusters at the base of infected trees; a distinguishing feature of Clitocybe tabescens is the absence of a ring (annulus) on the stalk, differentiating it from common Armillaria mellea.

Developmental conditions and harm: The pathogen thrives in warm and humid environments, often emerging in areas where trees are already stressed by drought or poor soil management. The primary harm occurs when the fungal mycelium consumes the root bark and cambium, effectively girdling the tree underground. This disrupts water and nutrient transport, leading to yellowing, dieback, and eventually the death of the tree.

Protection and control measures: Effective management of Clitocybe tabescens relies primarily on preventative silvicultural and horticultural practices. Key strategies include:

  • Prompt removal of infected trees, including the stump and major roots, to destroy the inoculum source.
  • Digging trenches around infected areas to physically block the spread of rhizomorphs through the soil.
  • Improving overall plant health through balanced fertilization and irrigation to increase natural resistance.
  • Avoiding planting sensitive crops in sites previously cleared of oak or other highly susceptible species.
