Clypeoporthe iliau is a specialized fungal phytopathogen belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and genus Clypeoporthe. This organism is primarily recognized as the causal agent of "Iliau disease," a detrimental infection affecting sugar cane cultivation globally, particularly in tropical regions.

The disease primarily manifests on the stalks of the sugar cane plant. The fungus produces a dense mat of mycelium that encircles the stems, effectively strangling the plant tissues. This results in the stunting of growth, tissue necrosis, and in severe cases, the complete death of the cane shoots, which significantly impacts harvest volumes.

The biological cycle of Clypeoporthe iliau is heavily dependent on organic residues. The pathogen persists in soil and on diseased stalks, forming reproductive structures known as perithecia. During humid weather, spores are released and dispersed by rain splashes or wind, facilitating the spread of the fungus to healthy neighboring plants.
