Description

Cochliobolus heterostrophus is an ascomycete fungus and the causal agent of Southern Corn Leaf Blight (SCLB). Its asexual stage, Bipolaris maydis, is frequently observed in the field, producing numerous conidia that act as the primary inoculum for infection. The pathogen is recognized as a significant threat to global maize production, capable of causing widespread yield losses under favorable environmental conditions.

The disease primarily affects leaves, starting as small, chlorotic lesions that expand into elongated, tan-colored necrotic patches with distinct margins. In severe cases, the lesions merge, covering most of the leaf surface and causing systemic necrosis. The fungus can also colonize the stalks and ear husks, leading to reduced grain filling, lower kernel weight, and increased susceptibility to stalk rot pathogens.

The lifecycle of Cochliobolus heterostrophus is highly dependent on moisture and temperature. Conidia are dispersed via wind and rain splash, infecting host tissues through direct penetration or natural openings like stomata. The fungus survives unfavorable conditions as mycelium or conidia in crop debris left on the field surface. It thrives in humid environments with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C, allowing for multiple infection cycles within a single season.

Economic impact of the pathogen is substantial, as it directly restricts the photosynthetic capability of the plant. Significant leaf area loss leads to nutrient mobilization from the stalks to the grain, weakening the plant structure. Furthermore, the presence of the fungus on infected kernels can decrease seed quality and germination rates, complicating the production of certified seed lots for subsequent years.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to break the disease cycle. Key strategies include the selection of resistant corn hybrids, which offer the most robust protection. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, deep plowing to bury infected residues, and timely harvesting are essential to reduce local inoculum pressure. Additionally, chemical control using foliar fungicides is recommended in high-risk environments or when early symptoms of the blight appear.
