Cocksfoot mottle

Cocksfoot mottle is a destructive plant disease caused by the Cocksfoot mottle virus (CfMV), a member of the Sobemovirus genus. The pathogen primarily affects Dactylis glomerata (cocksfoot or orchard grass), which is a crucial species for temperate pasture and hay production worldwide.

Taxonomically, the virus belongs to the family Solemoviridae. It is a non-enveloped, isometric virus containing single-stranded RNA. Its ability to disrupt cellular functions leads to systemic infection in susceptible grass hosts, causing significant physiological stress and growth retardation.

The transmission cycle is mediated by beetle vectors, primarily Oulema species. Once the insects feed on infected foliage, they acquire the virus and transmit it to healthy plants. Additionally, the virus can spread mechanically through contact between plant parts, especially in pastures subjected to intensive grazing or machinery movement.

Development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions that favor both grass growth and vector activity. Infected plants exhibit characteristic mottled or streaked leaves, stunted growth, and reduced seed yield. In severe cases, the entire stand vigor is compromised, leading to economic losses in forage output.

Management strategies for Cocksfoot mottle focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Key tactics include monitoring vector populations, choosing resistant or tolerant grass cultivars, and maintaining clean field borders to eliminate alternative weed hosts. Ensuring the overall health of the sward is essential to minimize the impact of this persistent viral pathogen.
