Systematic position and type of pathogen: Coniothyrium wernsdorffiae is a microscopic fungus belonging to the phylum Ascomycota. It is a specialized necrotrophic pathogen that targets the cambium and bark tissues of host plants, causing necrotic processes that disrupt the plant's vascular system.

Diseases and host plants: This fungus is the primary causal agent of infectious rose stem canker. It specifically attacks various species and varieties of roses, leading to the formation of characteristic sunken lesions on stems. If left untreated, these lesions can girdle the stem, causing the death of the entire plant section above the infection site.

Biology and life cycle: The fungus survives the winter primarily in infected woody tissues. In spring, pycnidia (fruiting bodies) develop within these lesions. When moisture is present, they release masses of conidia (spores) that are spread to healthy stems via splashing rainwater, wind currents, or garden maintenance tools used for pruning without proper disinfection.

Conditions for development and severity: Development is heavily favored by prolonged cool and damp conditions. The pathogen frequently infects plants that have been stressed by winter freezing or improper overwintering practices (such as excessive humidity under winter covers). Severity is high because the fungus can remain active throughout the dormant season, gradually expanding its necrotic reach.

Protection and control measures: Effective management relies on strict sanitation. All infected stems should be pruned back to healthy wood, and the debris must be removed or destroyed. It is crucial to disinfect all pruning tools between plants to prevent mechanical spread. Additionally, maintaining optimal ventilation and applying appropriate copper-based or systemic fungicides during early spring growth help mitigate the risk of infection.
