Systematic position and nature of the pathogen: Corticium koleroga (also known as Pellicularia koleroga) is a basidiomycetous fungus that belongs to the kingdom Fungi. As a specialized phytopathogen, it is recognized as a major cause of the disease known as "black rot" or "koleroga," which affects tropical crops, most notably coffee (Coffea spp.).

Diseases and host crops: The primary host of Corticium koleroga is the coffee plant. The fungus primarily attacks leaves, young branches, and berries. Infected tissues show initial water-soaked spots that rapidly darken into brown or black necrotic patches. A defining characteristic of this disease is that dead leaves often do not fall immediately but remain hanging from the branches, attached by thin, web-like mycelial strands.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of this pathogen is highly dependent on environmental humidity. The fungus forms a thin, white mycelial mat on the underside of the leaves. Under high humidity conditions, this mat produces a layer of spores (hymenium). These spores are easily disseminated through rain splashes and wind, allowing the infection to spread rapidly throughout a plantation during favorable weather conditions.

Developmental conditions and economic impact: The pathogen thrives in regions with consistently high humidity (often above 80%) and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C. The economic damage is severe; the disease can lead to extensive defoliation, preventing the tree from effectively photosynthesizing, damaging fruit set, and significantly reducing the overall yield and quality of the coffee beans.

Protection and control measures: Effective management of the disease relies on a combination of cultural and chemical methods:

  • Maintaining proper plantation sanitation by removing and burning infected plant debris.
  • Pruning coffee trees to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration, which reduces micro-climatic humidity.
  • Applying copper-based fungicides or other appropriate systemic fungicides during the onset of the rainy season.
  • Implementing wider spacing between plants to decrease the risk of pathogen spread through contact and wind.
