Corticium stevensii (synonym Pellicularia koleroga) is a destructive phytopathogenic fungus belonging to the Kingdom Fungi, Phylum Basidiomycota, and Order Hymenochaetales. In agronomy, this pathogen is recognized as the causal agent of necrotic diseases and blights affecting the aerial parts of woody plants and various shrubs.
The primary disease associated with this fungus is known as "thread blight" or "koleroga." It frequently impacts apple trees, citrus, coffee, and other horticultural crops in humid tropical and subtropical regions. The disease manifests as a web-like mat of fungal hyphae covering leaves and twigs, which leads to premature defoliation and severe canopy damage.
The biology of the pathogen is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and warm temperatures. The fungus spreads via basidiospores and mycelial fragments, which are dispersed by wind, rain splashes, or insect vectors. Once attached to the bark or petioles, the mycelium penetrates plant tissues to extract nutrients, releasing toxins that cause cell death and tissue necrosis.
Optimal conditions for the rapid spread of Corticium stevensii occur during prolonged rainy seasons where relative humidity exceeds 80-90%. Under these circumstances, the fungal mycelium colonizes the tree canopy aggressively, causing symptoms often described as "leaf burn." Infected branches may suffer dieback, significantly impacting orchard yield and the overall health of the host plant.
Effective management strategies require an integrated approach including:
- Pruning and destroying infected branches to reduce inoculum load.
- Improving canopy airflow through proper tree thinning.
- Applying copper-based fungicides or systemic chemical treatments during the growing season.
- Sanitation practices such as removing fallen leaves and mummified fruit that act as primary inoculum sources for the next season.
