Coryneum rhododendri is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the Dothideomycetes class, acting as a specialized plant pathogen. Often associated with the genus Seimatosporium in taxonomic literature, this fungus primarily targets plants in the Ericaceae family, particularly rhododendrons. It is classified as an ascomycete fungus that causes severe localized tissue damage.

The disease caused by this pathogen is characterized by distinct leaf spotting. Initially, small brown or reddish-brown lesions appear on the leaves. As the disease advances, these spots expand, often developing a darker, well-defined margin. The center of these lesions eventually becomes populated with small black pycnidia, which are the fungal fruiting bodies responsible for releasing spores into the environment.

The biological cycle of this pathogen is highly dependent on environmental moisture. The fungus spreads via conidia, which are easily transported by water droplets, rain splashes, or wind. These spores penetrate the host tissue through stomata or mechanical injuries. The pathogen survives the winter in fallen leaves and infected woody parts, which serve as the primary source of inoculum when conditions become favorable in the spring.

The development of the fungus is accelerated by high humidity, poor air circulation, and cool temperatures. Dense, unpruned hedges or bushes are particularly susceptible to widespread infections. The economic and aesthetic impact is significant, as the resulting premature leaf drop weakens the plant, reducing its vigor, photosynthetic efficiency, and overall ornamental value in the landscape.

Effective management and control strategies involve:

  • Rigorous sanitation, including the removal and destruction of infected leaves and branches.
  • Application of copper-based fungicides to inhibit spore germination in early spring.
  • Pruning to improve air circulation within the shrub canopy.
  • Avoiding overhead irrigation to keep leaf surfaces dry.
  • Use of systemic fungicides if infection levels are high to protect new growth.
