Cowpea mild mottle virus

Cowpea mild mottle virus (CPMMV) is a plant virus belonging to the Carlavirus genus within the Betaflexiviridae family. It primarily affects leguminous plants, such as cowpea, soybean, peanut, and beans, functioning as an obligate parasite that significantly compromises plant physiological processes and yield.

Clinical symptoms of CPMMV infection include mild mosaic patterns, leaf chlorosis, curling or puckering of leaves, and stunted growth. In severe cases, the entire plant structure becomes distorted, leading to reduced floral development and poor pod filling, which leads to substantial economic losses in commercial agriculture.

The transmission of this virus is primarily mediated by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci in a semi-persistent manner. The virus is acquired by the vector during feeding on infected plant tissues and is readily transmitted to healthy hosts, often resulting in rapid disease outbreaks within a field or greenhouse setting.

The development of the disease is strictly linked to environmental conditions that support the proliferation of the whitefly vector. Warm, humid climates facilitate the rapid reproduction of the insect population, thereby increasing the frequency of virus inoculation. Mechanical transmission and contaminated seed lots also contribute to the geographical spread of the virus.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach to control this virus. This includes implementing rigorous weed management strategies to remove potential viral reservoirs, utilizing chemical control to suppress whitefly populations, and enforcing strict quarantine measures for seed distribution to prevent the introduction of the pathogen into new areas.
